Clare publish a new Application Note for their CPC1580 Isolated Gate Driver IC
Clare Inc, an IXYS company, have published a new Application Note containing technical information for their CPC1580 Isolated Gate Driver IC.
The CPC1580 device is a low cost optically isolated gate driver IC for DC Power switch applications up to 60V. It is similar to Clare's DC Power Relays (CPC17xx series) but has the following major differences:
- The CPC1580 has an internal switching speed enhancement circuit for faster turn-on/turn-off.
- The CPC1580 requires an external power MOSFET.
Compared to other competitive DC gate drivers, the CPC1580 has an advantage in that it does not require an external load-side power supply as it draws its bias from the load voltage through the bootstrap capacitor. The driver enhances the turn-on and turn-off time.
The new Application Note contains detailed examples of how to use this IC and provides two load switching design examples with details:
1. 24V load at 11 Amps
2. 48V load at 5 Amps
As an example of switch speed, Clare's CPC1708 Power SSR rated at 60V (derate to 48V for comparison purposes) and 4 Amps has a turn-on time of 20msec and turn-off time of 5msec. This calculates to a maximum switch frequency of approximately 50Hz. In the 48V load, 5 amp app note example using the CPC1580 driver and external MOSFET, the application circuit can support a maximum switch frequency of approximately 400Hz.
